Use Tiered Discount when a merchant wants to reward customers as they buy more items or spend more money. The template card says: “Offer bigger discounts as customers buy more or reach higher cart values.” The example shown in AIOD is “Buy 3+, Save 15%.”

When to use this template

Use this template for:
  • Buy 2 items, get 5% off.
  • Buy 3 or more items, get a larger percentage off.
  • Spend $100, get free shipping.
  • Spend more to unlock a free gift.
  • Volume discounts where each tier has its own reward.
  • Progress-bar offers that show customers how close they are to the next tier.
Use another template when the discount is a single item-level discount, a classic BOGO offer, a simple free gift with purchase, or a shipping-only discount without volume tiers. When every tier rewards only gifts, such as “Spend $50 get Gift A, spend $100 get Gift B”, use Tiered free gifts. It is the same editor limited to gift tiers, with offer pricing and cart behavior settings for the gifts.

Entry point

In Shopify admin, open Apps > AIOD Discount & Gift > Discount Templates. Click Create on the Tiered Discount card. AIOD opens a form titled Tiered Discount.

Top-level controls

The form is split into these tabs: AIOD shows a Discount Summary panel while the merchant configures the offer. The summary includes how customers apply the discount, discount type, target, tier details, discount combinations, and Shopify rule size. AIOD can show a theme-extension alert at the top of the form. The alert says Required: Theme Extension Should Be Enabled and includes Activate theme extension. The merchant must save the Latest Widget Manager extension in the theme editor when using the storefront widget.

Status mode

The top-right status dropdown controls who can use or see the discount.

Offer settings

Use the Offer tab to define what qualifies for the discount and what the customer receives.

Where should this discount apply?

This section controls the products that can qualify for tier rewards. Options:
  • All products
  • Specific products
  • Specific collections
  • Specific variants
All products was selected by default in the observed form.

Exclude items from conditions

At the bottom of the Where should this discount apply? card, Exclude items (optional) hides selected products, variants, or collections while tier requirements are checked. The exclusion applies to every tier. Read Exclude items from conditions for information about this.

Minimum requirement

This section controls how customers unlock each tier. For All products, AIOD shows these requirement options: For Specific products, Specific collections, and Specific variants, AIOD shows these requirement options: When Cart quantity or Item quantity is selected, each tier uses Minimum Quantity. When Cart subtotal or Item subtotal is selected, each tier uses Minimum Subtotal.

Calculation method

The Calculation method card appears after the merchant selects a specific item target and an item-based requirement. It appears for these combinations: The card says: “Choose whether the condition applies across all selected items or individually.” Options: The examples change based on the requirement: The same card also shows Selected item scope with this helper text: “Choose how selected items are counted when checking the requirement.” Available Selected item scope options depend on the selected target: Across all selected items was selected by default in the observed form. For Any selected items, Across all selected items means the total quantity or subtotal across any selected items in the cart must meet the requirement. For Each selected item, Across all selected items means the quantity or subtotal for each selected item must meet the requirement.

Each tier defines a minimum requirement and a reward. The default observed tier was: Click Add another tier to add more tier levels.

Reward types

The Customer gets dropdown controls the reward for a tier. For percentage and fixed-amount rewards, Apply discount on has these options:
  • Product Discount (applies at line item, show in cart & checkout)
  • Order Discount (applies at order level, show in checkout)
For free gifts, AIOD tells merchants to ensure variants are active, in stock, and have a price greater than 0. The gift selector uses Select variants and shows No variants selected until variants are chosen. For shipping rewards, Shipping Discount Applies to has these options:
  • To all shipping methods
  • To specific shipping methods

Gift adding method

The discount method is chosen under How should this discount be applied?. On a new discount, the other method’s two options are listed but disabled, with a tooltip that says to select that method under How should this discount be applied? first. After the discount is saved, only the current method’s two options are shown. Choosing Customer chooses or Code + customer chooses turns on the gift widget on the Gift Widget tab, because customers claim their gifts from it. With a customer-choice method, customers claim gifts separately for each unlocked tier, up to that tier’s Free gift quantity. In checkout, the AIOD gift claim lists gifts under a heading per tier, such as Tier 1, when several tiers are unlocked. A claimed gift is removed when its tier is no longer unlocked.
A tiered discount with a customer-choice gift method saved before October 22, 2026 needs to be opened and saved once. Until then, a gift claimed in checkout can be charged at full price.

On the storefront, the widget opens on the highest gift tier the cart has reached, and moves to the new highest tier as the cart changes. Before the cart reaches any threshold, it shows the first tier. If no tier uses Free gift, the tab is hidden.

Tiered gift widget

When the gift adding method on the Offer tab is a customer-choice method (Customer chooses or Code + customer chooses), customers claim their gift from this widget. Selecting that method turns the widget on, and the checkbox is locked with the helper text “Required while customers choose their gift. Change the gift adding method on the Offer tab to turn it off.”
